Don Pedro, with the help of Hero, Claudio, and Leonato, undertakes the seemingly impossible task of bringing Benedick and Beatrice together in matrimony in the seven days before the marriage of Hero and Claudio.

Don Pedro's last line can be understood to mean, "Pay attention to your music and nothing else. Meanwhile, Don Pedro's brother Don John, the "bastard prince", plots to stop the wedding, embarrass his brother and wreak misery on Leonato and Claudio.

Friar Francis The good friar who is to perform the marriage of Hero and Claudio. Prompted by the day's harrowing events, Benedick and Beatrice confess their love for each other. Don John had fled the country after the successful outcome of his plot, but Benedick swears that he will find Don John and kill him as well as Claudio.

Beatrice's defense of Hero after her denouncement unites Beatrice and Benedick in the cause of Hero's revenge, and they declare their love for one another. After Hero is announced "dead," Leonato orders Claudio to marry his "niece," who is actually Hero in disguise. As the play begins, Leonato prepares to welcome some friends home from a war. All of the deception proves successful when Beatrice and Benedick are both won over by the perceived love bestowed upon them by the other and decide to reconcile. Don John tries to cause trouble by persuading Claudio that Don Pedro means to betray him and keep Hero for himself, but the villain is foiled in his plot and Claudio remains faithful to Don Pedro.

He informs Don Pedro and Claudio that Hero is unfaithful, and arranges for them to see John's associate Borachio enter her bedchamber where he has an amorous liaison actually with Margaret, Hero's chambermaid.
